Add Questions to a Test via a File

At times, instructors may want to create a file of test questions external of Blackboard and add those to a course via the upload route. Blackboard has two distinct processes for adding question via an imported file, depending on where the import file originates. Select the correct directions below for the file you need to upload. If you simply need directions for how to manage questions in pools that have already been added to Blackboard, see the Manage Question Pools article.

What type of file do you need to upload?

Originating from another Blackboard Course or a Third Party Publisher

If you need to import a file to a test bank that you have exported from another Blackboard course or that was provided by a Third Party Courseware publisher, see the Question Banks article.

Created manually outside of Blackboard

If you would like to create a file of questions outside of the Blackboard LMS and then import that file, see the Import or Upload Questions article.

General guidance for importing a manually created file

  • Questions should be created in Excel
  • Questions must be formatted using the key words described in the  Import or Upload Questions article
  • Prior to import, the question file must be saved as a Tab-delimited TXT file
  • Import takes place by creating a new test in Blackboard and selecting to "upload questions from a file"

The Import or Upload Questions article explains the process for creating and importing manually creating file questions in detail. Please refer to this article for more information.
